“Outside Lies Magic” is the title of a book by John Stilgoe, in which the author/landscape architect encourages exploring the world in order to build an awareness of places and things that are normally overlooked. This ongoing series of works on paper springs from fragments that are just those, things normally unseen. This work refers to moments of juxtaposed forms upon which time, nature and humans have either intentionally or accidentally made their mark.

Here is a list of some thoughts that occupy my mind while making this work:

Vernacular architecture
Vast space/light
Collision of colors
Odd colors
Meeting of walls
Industrial areas
Decaying, weathered, used things
Erosion
Obsolescence
The overlooked/unseen
The backsides of things
Whimsy
Barriers
Broken boundaries
Ambiguity
Hidden histories
Odd juxtapositions/combinations
Dualities
Unplanned structural relationships
The spaces in between
Murky light
